SPANAIR 4

E-mails from the Spanish pilots' union Sepla to Spanair management said day-to-day running of the airline was "a disaster getting worse by the day".

Sepla said there were not enough air crews or ground resources and planes were repeatedly being grounded.

It also said that Spanair's older MD80 series aircraft were not being updated fast enough. The airline has a fleet of 36 such aircraft, including the one that crashed.

In a January e-mail Sepla complained that "the MD fleet has not been renewed in favour of A320s in the agreed time frame."

In April 2007 the union warned: "The lack of resources and their quality on the ground, the repeated AOGs [grounded planes] in the fleet, the scarcity of crews and the system of movement of crew members, mean the general feeling is one of operational chaos that places the passengers at risk."
